Visit Capri’s Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra)

Located on the island of Capri, near Naples, the Blue Grotto, known locally as Grotta Azzurra, is an unforgettable natural site. This underwater grotto, which takes its name from its intensely blue, sparkling waters, was once used as a personal bathing spot by the Roman emperor Tiberius.

Today, it’s considered the island’s must-see spot. It’s an experience to add to your list of things to do when visiting the island of Capri.

How to visit the Grotte Bleue

It all starts at Marina Grande, the main port on the island of Capri, from where you’ll arrive by boat from Naples (we explain how to take the boat in our detailed article on visiting Naples).

You can find various organized cruises right on the port, which usually include a tour of the island before arriving at the grotto. Almost all of them offer the same thing, and the visit to the cave follows the same ritual.

Please note, however, that the wait can be long, especially in high season, as the entrance may have to be closed due to tides.

The best time to visit the Grotte Bleue is in the morning, when the sun’s reflection on the water creates a unique light show.

As for the duration of the visit inside the cave, it’s generally quite short, around ten minutes, but the spectacle inside is so impressive that it will stay with you for much longer, so make sure you savor every moment.

Where can you buy your tickets?

We recommend you book in advance to avoid waiting too long in high season and wasting time looking for your tour on site.
