Useful information and tips

Opening hours

  • Tuesday to Saturday from 8:15 am to 7 pm
  • Sunday from 2 to 7 pm
  • Closed on Monday

Visiting time

Visiting time is 15 minutes, not more.

We therefore advise you to arrive at least 30 minutes in advance to collect your tickets from the ticket office.

It is a little short, however it is a painting to see absolutely, at least, once in its life and this gauge makes it possible to limit the number of visitors, on the same slot, that makes it possible to fully appreciate the work and to avoid its deterioration.

What you will see during your visit?

As mentioned above, the authorized visiting time in the refectory, where the work is present, is 15 minutes, and not one more!

The before and after areas include well-done explanations of the history of the work and its restoration. You can also visit the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie for its beautiful cloister.

Other important information for your visit, the photos are possible but without flash and we also advise you to opt for an outfit covering the shoulders and knees.

Some history

The origin of the painting and its meaning

The subject is classic, the scene represents the last meal of Jesus, at the moment, when he announces that someone was going to deliver him.

Leonardo da Vinci wanted to represent this moment of suspense where the disciples are questioning the origin of the milking.

It is for him the moment to put into practice his colossal work on the representation of human emotions in painting, each person represents a different facial expression (protest, questioning, protest, anger…).

Jesus, placed in the exact center of the composition, as well as on the vanishing line of the viewer, is represented as overwhelmed and resigned, his face is clearly visible against the light of the window.

Another point about this work, its proportions are colossal 4.5 meters high and almost 9 meters long.

Techniques of realization

The fresco is painted on the wall, so it has undergone many restorations to keep it in good condition.

Throughout his life, Leonardo da Vinci worked a lot on movements and emotions, his numerous researches can be found in this work. It is a breathtaking realization, the Christ and his disciples seem alive.

Is The Last Supper worth visiting?

In our opinion, this work is one of the things you should see at least once in your life. During your visit you will be impressed by its size as well as by the different facial expressions of Jesus and his apostles and all the details that the painter has hidden in his painting.
