{"id":21084,"date":"2016-08-18T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T09:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/and-what-are-we-eating-chile\/"},"modified":"2024-03-29T11:36:28","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T10:36:28","slug":"et-sinon-quest-what-you-eat-chili","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/et-sinon-quest-what-you-eat-chili\/","title":{"rendered":"And what are we eating #Chile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"p12\">In Chilean Patagonia, we ate almost all our meals at the inn.<\/span><span id=\"p1\">  The cost of living is so high in this part of the country that all travelers cook.<\/span><span id=\"p17\">  At mealtimes, the kitchens were packed, and the atmosphere was always very friendly, with people exchanging travel tips and even recipes!<\/span><span id=\"p16\">  Then, the further north we went, the more we ate outside!<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-984\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-dominant-color=\"8c6a6d\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8c6a6d;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-984 not-transparent\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SPECIALITE-4-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"SPECIALTY-4\" width=\"377\" height=\"503\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chorillana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_983\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-983\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-dominant-color=\"905758\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #905758;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-983 not-transparent\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SPECIALITE-3-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"SPECIALITY-3\" width=\"378\" height=\"504\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-983\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chorillana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p99\">Our favourite specialities:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p100\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p101\"><strong> Ceviche:<\/strong> raw fish <span id=\"103\" class=\"s-rg-t\">marinated<\/span> in lemon juice, garnished with sweet potatoes, chunks of onion and coriander.<\/span><span id=\"p102\"> Very fresh and very good.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p29\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p30\"><strong>Completo: <\/strong>the benchmark sandwich, made with hot dog bun, <span id=\"51\" class=\"s-rg-t\">knacki<\/span> sausage, chunks of tomato and onion, topped with crushed avocado.<\/span><span id=\"p31\">  The latter is very present in Chilean cuisine, and they&#8217;re excellent &#8211; nothing like the unripe, often tasteless ones we find here.<span id=\"53\" class=\"s-rg-t\">.<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p78\">  We ate them at practically every meal!<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p79\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p80\"><strong> Pastel de choclo<\/strong>:<\/span><span id=\"p81\"> This is their quiche <span id=\"92\" class=\"s-rg-t\">lorraine<\/span>, where minced meat is cooked with grapes and onions, then poured into a shortcrust pastry topped with corn pur\u00e9e, and baked au gratin.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p82\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p83\"><strong>Chorillana:<\/strong> typical Latin American dish, made with pieces of beef, sausages, French fries, peppers and onions, <span id=\"94\">topped with<\/span> a fried egg and a beer or wine sauce.<\/span><span id=\"p84\"> We ate it for 4 months under different names.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p104\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p105\"><strong>Sopapillas: <\/strong>pancakes made from fried pumpkin flour, they were mainly found on the street, especially in Santiago, at any <span id=\"111\">time<\/span> of day.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p107\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p108\"><strong>Empanadas:<\/strong> these turnovers filled with baked <span id=\"p106\">(or fried<\/span> ) meat, chicken or cheese are also very common in this country.<\/span><span id=\"p109\"> Unlike its northern neighbors, they are particularly hearty, much to our delight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-976\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-dominant-color=\"5e5750\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #5e5750;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-976 not-transparent\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SPECIALITE-2-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"SPECIALITY 2\" width=\"262\" height=\"350\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Empanadas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_982\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-982\" style=\"width: 487px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-dominant-color=\"7e6e5c\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #7e6e5c;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-982 not-transparent\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/PHOTO-COUVERTURE-SPECIALITE-1-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"PHOTO-COVER-+-SPECIALITY\" width=\"487\" height=\"352\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-982\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ceviche<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p122\">In terms of sweet treats :<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p123\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p124\"><strong>Manjar:<\/strong> it&#8217;s the Chilean Dulce de <span id=\"154\" class=\"s-rg-t\">leche<\/span>, only sweeter.<\/span><span id=\"p193\"> We much prefer its<\/span><span id=\"p193\"><span id=\"201\" class=\"s-rg-t\">rgentine<\/span>.<\/span><br \/>\n&#8211;<strong>Berlinas:<\/strong><span id=\"p196\"> Chileans are <span id=\"203\" class=\"s-rg-t\">big fans of<\/span> these simple doughnuts filled with <span id=\"204\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Manjar<\/span> or sometimes cream.<\/span><span id=\"p197\"> But never with chocolate, which we really <span id=\"205\" class=\"s-rg-t\">missed<\/span> in Latin America.<\/span><span id=\"p198\"> We made up for lost time in Australia, as we ran out of stock after our first trip to the supermarket!<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p199\">&#8211;<\/span><strong>Coronas:<\/strong><span id=\"p133\"> it&#8217;s a round twist with cream, a cake without <span id=\"164\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Manjar<\/span> or Dulce, we were rather keen for a change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-979\" style=\"width: 781px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-dominant-color=\"aa8478\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #aa8478;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-979 not-transparent\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SUCRE-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"SUGAR\" width=\"781\" height=\"585\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Berlinas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p134\">And what else do we drink?<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p136\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p137\"><strong> Pisco sour:<\/strong> it&#8217;s a cocktail made with Pisco <span id=\"p191\">(grape alcohol)<\/span>, lemon and a little egg white. I can reassure you, it didn&#8217;t have a viscous texture at all.<\/span> <span id=\"p138\"> Chile and Peru each claim to be the inventor.<\/span><span id=\"p139\"> We didn&#8217;t really care who invented what.<\/span><span id=\"p140\"> Thanks to this, we were able to drink it for 2 months;<\/span><span id=\"p141\">)<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p142\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p143\"><strong>Terremoto:<\/strong> a cocktail made with white wine, <span id=\"169\" class=\"s-rg-t\">grenadine<\/span> and pineapple ice, so sweet it&#8217;s easy to drink.<\/span><span id=\"p144\"> We&#8217;d ask for<span id=\"170\" class=\"s-rg-t\">&#8220;una<\/span> <span id=\"171\" class=\"s-rg-t\">replica<\/span>&#8221; to order the next one.<\/span><span id=\"p145\"> The origin of its name, surely because the next day, it was a real earthquake in our heads.<span id=\"175\" class=\"s-rg-t\">.<\/span>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p207\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"p208\"><strong> Wine: <\/strong>just like in Argentina, we really enjoyed ourselves.<\/span><span id=\"p209\"> It was just to stock up before our 7 months <span id=\"214\" class=\"s-rg-t\">in<\/span><span class=\"s-bl-t\"><span id=\"215\">Asia<\/span><span id=\"216\">!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p222\">As for restaurants, in Valpara\u00edso we ate an excellent <span id=\"225\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Chorillana<\/span> with<strong> <span id=\"226\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Pimenton<\/span><\/strong> and crazy <span id=\"227\" class=\"s-rg-t\">empanadas<\/span> at <strong>Delicias Express.<\/strong><\/span><span id=\"p223\">  In Santiago, the ice creams at <strong>Emporio Rosa<\/strong> were really good.<\/span><span id=\"p224\">  And we ate Japanese food during our visits to these 2 cities, I used to eat it about 2 times a week in France <span id=\"p221\">(yes slightly addicted)<\/span> so I was really starting to miss it!<\/span><\/p>\n<div style='text-align:right' class='yasr-auto-insert-visitor'><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Chilean Patagonia, we ate almost all our meals at the inn.
