Argentina is renowned for its excellent MEAT, and with good reason! On the other hand, we didn’t expect so many Italian restaurants and ice-cream parlors, each better than the last. We were quite happy with all the Italian influence.<\/p>\n

To stay within our budget, we often cooked in hostels, but still indulged ourselves with some great cuts of meat, pastries and ice cream galore.<\/p>\n

Some specialties, vegetarians abstain:
\n– The asado, an <\/strong>assortment of several meats, generally consisting of beef and sausages cooked in a “parilla” style, is a traditional dish.
\n parilla<\/span>
\n<\/strong>“These are cooked on a grill over hot embers. The meat is always extremely tender and delicious.<\/span> I particularly like the beef<\/strong><\/span> chorizo<\/strong> beef.<\/span> The side dish, often French fries, is served on the side.<\/span>Legu-what<\/span>?<\/span> Uh sorry, no conozco<\/span>..<\/span><\/span>
\n–<\/span> Empanadas: <\/strong>turnovers filled with<\/span> meat, chicken, cheese or corn.<\/span> Available everywhere, they are generally eaten as an<\/span><\/span> appetizer or “en<\/span><\/span> cas”.<\/span>
\n–<\/span>Humitas<\/strong>:<\/span> a kind of corn dough<\/span>, seasoned with a few vegetables and cheese, all cooked in a corn leaf.<\/span> Well garnished, it’s very good.<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of sweet treats,
\n–<\/span> Dulce de leche:<\/strong> this is THE<\/span> national spread, consumed far more than Nutella<\/span> and jam combined in our country. At first, it was surprisingly sweet, with a slight caramel taste.<\/span> Then it became a staple of our breakfasts.<\/span>
\n–<\/span>Afajoles:<\/strong> you can find them absolutely everywhere, and they’re two buttery cakes bound together with dulce de leche.<\/span> Fat, fat and more fat.<\/span> A real KILLER<\/span>.<\/span> We got a recipe from an Argentinian, and the lucky ones will be able to taste them on our return trip.<\/span>
\n–<\/span> Ice creams:<\/strong> there are plenty of ice cream parlors, and most of them are handcrafted, with a particular liking for the perfume.
\n Calafate<\/span>
\n<\/strong> (it’s a purple fruit from Patagonia)<\/span> excellent! We also tested every possible kind of Dulce ice cream (with nuts, fruit, peanuts..<\/span>.)<\/span>.<\/span> In short, we had a lot of fun!<\/span><\/p>\n

And what else do we drink?<\/span>
\n–<\/span> Mate:<\/strong> it’s THE<\/span> all-day drink, and often a convivial moment.<\/span> It’s a bit like our coffee breaks.<\/span> As soon as you cross the border, every single customs officer<\/span> has a cup of mate<\/span> and a thermos<\/span> of hot water on his desk, so you know right away that you’ve arrived in Argentina!<\/span>
\n–<\/span> Powdered sodas:<\/strong> dilute in water, replace water at the table.<\/span> It’s very chemical, and we only tested it once.<\/span> Thanks, no thanks.<\/span><\/span>
\n–<\/span> Wine:<\/strong> these are generally very fruity wines that are really easy to drink at very reasonable prices.<\/span> We’ve never gone without!<\/span>
\n–<\/span> Beers<\/strong>: we didn’t try many, so we won’t have much to say about them.<\/span> We’ll have to come back!<\/span><\/div>\n

In short, as you can see, we really enjoyed ourselves in Argentina.<\/span> Our culinary world tour got off to a great start.<\/span><\/p>\n
