The design by Francesc Gu\u00e0rdia i Vial and Alexandre Soler i March dates from 1914. Construction continued until 1928, with Enrique Viedma Vidal overseeing the final stages, before the market opened that same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once inside, take a moment to look up. The stained glass, mosaics, colourful ceramics and vast metal framework let in plenty of light. Despite the bustle around the stalls, the building is pleasant to wander through and never feels enclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Covering more than 8,000 m\u00b2, the Central Market is one of Europe&#039;s largest covered markets. The architects managed to create a functional space while retaining plenty of details inspired by Valencian heritage. Its vaulted ceilings and iron columns soar above our heads, recalling the grand buildings of the early 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to eat at Valencia&#039;s Central Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as we entered the market, we were greeted by a mix of colours and aromas. Fruit, vegetables, cheeses, fish, Spanish cured meats: they&#039;re everywhere. Don&#039;t miss the <strong>Iberian ham<\/strong>, the <strong>olives<\/strong> and, of course, the <strong>Valencia oranges<\/strong>. We took the opportunity to pick up a quick lunch, along with a small smoothie to recharge our batteries. We should have bought two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chatting with the stallholders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another thing that makes the <strong>Mercado Central<\/strong> really special is the atmosphere in its aisles. We found the stallholders happy to share cooking tips or explain where their products came from. All you have to do is ask. It&#039;s time to try out your best Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These conversations add a personal touch to the visit, something we particularly appreciate on our travels. Moments like these are also part of what makes us travel and keeps us exploring new destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our tips for making the most of your visit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your priority is to see the market when it&#039;s quiet, we recommend arriving shortly after it opens. We visited between 10 am and midday. This gave us the chance to enjoy the market while it was still bustling, after the regulars had done their early shopping and before the stalls closed for the day. It can be busier at weekends and during peak tourist periods, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allow at least an hour if, like Matthieu, you enjoy browsing every stall and tasting a bit of everything. You&#039;ll find plenty of caf\u00e9s and restaurants where you can linger over lunch. We settled down about 100 metres south of the market, in <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/k8LwyRw5mkrCfonY8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a small square with a children&#039;s playground<\/a>. It was perfect for eating and letting our daughter play on the swings after a morning of sightseeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also easily visit the Silk Exchange, just opposite, then head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/visit-saint-mary-valencia\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"44616\">St Mary&#039;s Cathedral in Valencia<\/a>, about 400 metres away.
