Hidden away in an ancient quarry cut into the rock, this cemetery is home to <strong>thousands of anonymous skulls<\/strong>, neatly lined up in a row. For centuries, Neapolitans would come here to &#8220;adopt&#8221; a skull, pray to it and put flowers on it, hoping for protection in return.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The place, at once mystical and disturbing, is imbued with a unique aura. You feel a mixture of respect, popular belief and morbid fascination. This ancient Roman town, partly swallowed up by the sea, can be visited by kayak, transparent-bottomed boat or even by diving. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Underwater, you can see <strong>mosaics, columns and<\/strong> submerged <strong>thermal baths<\/strong>. Baia was the Saint-Tropez of Roman times. Today, it&#8217;s a little-visited site to explore in peace and quiet. A must-see if you&#8217;re staying 1 week in Naples.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Herculaneum_Pompeiis_forgotten_little_sister\"><\/span>Herculaneum: Pompeii&#8217;s forgotten little sister<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less famous than Pompeii, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/visit-herculanum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3996\">Herculaneum<\/a> is <strong>a true archaeological gem<\/strong>. More compact, better preserved, the archaeological site offers a more intimate view of daily life in Roman times. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The houses still have their storeys, the frescoes are vibrant, and you&#8217;re almost walking alone. The site is perfect for those who want to avoid the crowds while experiencing a gripping immersion in history. A pleasant surprise that we recommend with our eyes closed. You can only go there with permission (or on limited guided tours), which makes it all the more precious. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No cars, no houses: just trails, birds, endemic plants, and incredible sea views.
