During our motorhome tour of Europe, we absolutely fell in love with the route between Valencia and the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. It was a trip that surprised us at every turn: one day a secluded cove, the next a white hilltop village, then a bustling town or a hiking trail with a view of the sea. <\/p>\n\n

What did we not expect? To stumble upon so many natural, authentic spots that are still largely untouched by mass tourism. We\u2019d imagined this Mediterranean coast to be much more built up\u2026 but in the end, we found hidden gems around every bend. It just goes to show that Spain still has plenty of treasures to reveal, especially when you take the time to explore it at your own pace. In this article, we\u2019ll share our complete itinerary, our favorite spots, and all our tips for making the most of this camping trip. <\/p>\n\n

How to Plan Your Motorhome Road Trip Along the Mediterranean Coast<\/h2>\n\n

Before hitting the road, we recommend that you plan your stops<\/strong> carefully, especially if you\u2019re traveling during peak season. From remote spots where you can camp out to convenient rest areas and campgrounds with ocean views, there are plenty of options. <\/p>\n\n

Valencia: The Gateway to City Life, Beaches, and Culture<\/h2>\n\n

We\u2019re starting this road trip in Valencia<\/a>, a city where life is good. The atmosphere is relaxed, the light is golden, and there\u2019s always something to do: get lost in the narrow streets of the historic center, stroll through the central market, or bike to the beach along the Turia Gardens. <\/p>\n\n

Chelva and Chulilla: A Nature Getaway in the Valencian Hinterland<\/h2>\n\n

Before heading back down toward the sea, we take a detour inland. Chelva and Chulilla<\/strong> are two hilltop villages surrounded by spectacular scenery. The water trail in Chelva is a magnificent, accessible, and refreshing walk. In Chulilla, the Turia Gorge takes our breath away. It\u2019s a true escape into nature before returning to the coast. <\/p>\n\n

Heading for the Sea: Altea and the Alternative Costa Blanca<\/h2>\n\n

Back to the Mediterranean coast with Altea<\/strong>, a little gem perched above the sea. The historic center, with its white houses and cobblestone streets, is a real gem. We love the peaceful atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n

Alicante and the Surrounding Area: A City Break with a Culinary Twist<\/h2>\n\n

Alicante<\/strong> is our little city break. The city is lively without being overwhelming. We climb up to Santa Barbara Castle for a breathtaking view of the harbor, then lose ourselves in the colorful, flower-filled Santa Cruz neighborhood. For a bite to eat, we head to the central market: fruit, Iberian ham, cheeses\u2026 everything looks tempting. There are several campgrounds around the city, but there are also RV parks that are conveniently located for sightseeing without the hassle of finding parking. <\/p>\n\n

Cartagena, a City of History and Street Art<\/h2>\n\n

Cartagena<\/strong> is a wonderful surprise. Less well-known than Valencia or Alicante, this port city combines Roman ruins, military heritage, and contemporary street art. The city center is easy to explore on foot, and you can also take a stroll along the waterfront promenade. You can easily spend a full day there without getting bored. <\/p>\n\n

\"Cartagena,<\/figure>\n\n

San Gines and the Mazarr\u00f3n Area: Spain at Its Wildest<\/h2>\n\n

As you continue south, you can feel the atmosphere changing. The landscapes become more arid, and the villages quieter. We stop in San Gines, near Mazarr\u00f3n, to enjoy a spot that\u2019s still untouched by mass tourism. The red cliffs, tranquil coves, and evening light there are incredible. <\/p>\n\n

Cabo de Gata: The Grand Finale in a Western-Style Setting<\/h2>\n\n

We\u2019re wrapping up this road trip on a high note with the Cabo de Gata Natural Park<\/a>. It\u2019s one of our favorite places in Spain. Lunar landscapes, beaches with turquoise waters, white villages like San Jos\u00e9 or Las Negras\u2026 and a feeling of being at the end of the world. We go hiking, swimming, and exploring hidden coves. As for accommodations, there are several well-located campgrounds that let you enjoy the park without any stress. <\/p>\n\n

This road trip between Valencia and Cabo de Gata is a perfect blend of everything we love about traveling: the freedom to drive at our own pace, the beauty of the landscapes, and the variety of atmospheres.
