We’ve been to Vienna twice. The first time, in the middle of winter, a city break between cold weather, steaming caf\u00e9s and Christmas markets. The second time, during our European tour<\/a>, we spent ten days in the Austrian capital, because it was on our way back to France. <\/p>\n\n

These two very different stays in Vienna allowed us to discover both the enchanting charms of Vienna under the snow and its vibrant face as the days went by: concerts, strolls, gastronomy and unexpected little districts. <\/p>\n\n

Here are our top 5 in Vienna, a mix of must-see classics and favorites.<\/p>\n\n

1. Classical music concert<\/h2>\n\n

It’s a must-do in Vienna, even if you’re not a music connoisseur. There’s something for everyone: in legendary halls with exceptional acoustics, such as the Musikverein or the Vienna Opera House, but also in intimate churches with a hushed ambience, where candlelight and ancient vaults add a magical touch to the experience. <\/p>\n\n

More often than not, it’s the great repertoire of Vivaldi and Mozart that takes center stage, but we can also come across more surprising programs, mixing romantic works and revisited classics.<\/p>\n\n

During our two visits, we tried out a number of different atmospheres and formats, from concerts in large prestigious halls to small ensembles in more confidential venues. Each time, the magic happens, and it’s hard not to get carried away. <\/p>\n\n

2. The historic center and St. Stephen’s Cathedral<\/h2>\n\n

On our first visit to Vienna, we were impressed by the number of historic buildings concentrated in the city center<\/strong>. Around every corner, there’s a palace, a church, an inner courtyard that tells the story of another era. <\/p>\n\n

St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), with its glazed roofs and south tower dominating the city, remains one of the most striking landmarks.<\/p>\n\n

Our tip: go early in the morning, when the streets are still quiet, to enjoy the building without the crowds. Passion Vienne<\/a> also recommends a 1-day walking itinerary<\/a> to make sure you don’t miss out on anything in the historic center, from must-sees to hidden nuggets. <\/p>\n\n

3. Hofburg Palace: Sissi Museum<\/h2>\n\n

This is another must-see during your stay in Vienna. Visit <\/strong>Hofburg Palace<\/a>, the former imperial residence of the Habsburgs for over six centuries, occupies a central place in the city’s history and architecture.<\/p>\n\n

Today, it’s home to several fascinating museums, including the famous Sissi Museum<\/strong> (with its incredible history), the Imperial Apartments, the Imperial Treasury, the National Library and even the Spanish Riding School<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

On our winter visit, the tour of the apartments and treasury had a solemn, almost silent atmosphere. On our second visit, we also explored the surrounding gardens and courtyards, and took time to stroll around. <\/p>\n\n

4. Kunsthistorisches Museum<\/h2>\n\n

We love art museums, and this is one of Vienna’s most majestic and most visited museums: collections of European art, antiques, sculptures, Renaissance and Golden Age paintings, a mini Viennese Louvre.<\/p>\n\n

We marveled at the ornate ceilings, imposing staircases and wealth of artwork. Booking tickets in advance avoids long queues, especially in high season. <\/p>\n\n

5. Sch\u00f6nbrunn: palace, gardens and zoo<\/h2>\n\n

Another building not to be missed, and it’s impossible to visit Vienna without seeing Sch\u00f6nbrunn<\/a>, the imperial palace, its Baroque gardens, the labyrinth and the view from the gazebo.<\/p>\n\n

During our ten-day stay, we even devoted a day to strolling around the palace and its gardens, observing the locals.<\/p>\n\n
