It\u2019s a very popular tourist destination, easily accessible for a weekend trip from France. You can get to Milan by plane, train, or car.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Como is not limited to a single destination. Como and Lecco, located at the southern ends of the lake\u2019s two branches, are the closest gateways from Milan. Varenna, Bellagio, and Menaggio are located further north, in the central part of the lake. Schedules and fares are subject to change: always check your itinerary on the Trenord website before departure. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which mode of transportation should you choose?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The train<\/strong> is usually the easiest option for a day trip centered around Como, Lecco, or Varenna: it avoids traffic jams, the hassle of finding parking, and restricted traffic zones (ZTL).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A car<\/strong> offers more flexibility for a road trip lasting several days, with multiple accommodations or stops located far from train stations and ferry terminals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Taking the train and then the ferry<\/strong> is a good way to reach the center of the lake\u2014specifically Bellagio or Menaggio\u2014without having to travel along all the lakeside roads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I get from downtown Milan to Como?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve written a full article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/lac-de-come-depuis-milan\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"45138\">how to get to Lake Como from Milan<\/a>, but here&#8217;s a quick summary.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nearest city, Como, is located about 50 km from downtown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/milan\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3839\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milan<\/a> via the A8 and then the A9. The trip usually takes between 50 minutes and 1 hour when traffic is light. To allow for traffic delays, it\u2019s best to plan on about 1 hour and 15 minutes.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on your chosen entry point, exit, and route, traveling on the A8 and A9 may involve a toll. The amount also depends on the vehicle category: check the route and current rates using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autostrade.it\/it\/servizi-al-cliente\/pedaggio\/come-si-calcola-il-pedaggio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Autostrade per l\u2019Italia\u2019s official toll calculator<\/a> before you leave. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Milano Centrale, the direct train reaches Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes. From Milano Cadorna, another direct train reaches Como Lago in about 60 minutes. This second station is located on the outskirts of downtown Como and near the lake. Linate is about the same distance from both Como and Lecco. From Milan, it\u2019s about 50 km and a 45-minute to 1-hour drive, depending on traffic. There\u2019s also a direct train from Milano Centrale to Lecco that takes about 40 minutes.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving Around Lake Como<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A complete drive around Lake Como is about 170 km. Starting from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/visit-come-italia\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8071\">Como<\/a>, the route can take you through <strong>Menaggio, Domaso, and Dervio<\/strong>, then on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/varenna-lac-come\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5180\">Varenna<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/italie-lecco-lac-come\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5208\">Lecco<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/visit-bellagio-italia\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1905\">Bellagio<\/a> before returning to Como. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our road trip, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/fr\/italy-mainland\/milan?a_aid=PourquoiPasNous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">rented a car<\/a> so we could stop whenever we wanted. The lake tour follows several routes, including the SS340 on the western shore, the SS36 or the SP72 on the eastern shore, and the SP583 around Bellagio. The roads are paved, but some sections are narrow, winding, or pass through villages. The routes closest to the water are slower, but offer beautiful views.   <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Good to know:<\/strong> It\u2019s not always necessary to drive around the lake. In the center of the lake, ferries connect Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna, and Menaggio. This estimate is very rough: traffic, narrow roads, and driving through villages can significantly extend the trip.
