You’re bound to come across it during your stay anyway.

Construction began in 1386 and continued for several centuries. With its spires, sculptures and marble in pale and pinkish shades, it’s one of the historic centre’s must-see landmarks.

There are 5 areas you can visit:

The cathedral interior, where you can admire its vast columns and the light streaming through its colourful stained-glass windows.

The rooftop terraces, where you can walk among the sculpted spires with Milan at your feet (access by stairs or lift)).

The Duomo Museum, where you can take a close look at the cathedral’s original statues and stained-glass windows.

San Gottardo church, where you can see a fresco of the Crucifixion attributed to the school of Giotto.

The archaeological area, where you can step back into the 4th century as you explore the remains of an ancient baptistery beneath the Duomo’s forecourt.

We recommend arriving early, ideally with an early-morning time slot, to keep waiting time to a minimum. We recommend checking whether you’ll be able to see the auditorium on your chosen day.

The guided tour of the museum and theatre lasts about an hour.

Book the guided tour of La Scala

La Scala in Milan: our tips for your visit

A visit to La Scala in Milan offers the chance to discover one of the world’s most famous opera houses. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a 19th-century covered arcade. Even if you’re not here to shop, we recommend walking through the arcade as you explore the historic centre.

The arcade houses restaurants and luxury shops, including Prada and Armani. Needless to say, we didn’t buy anything there. We simply walked through the arcade from Piazza del Duomo to La Scala.

Our tip: we went back to the arcade very early the next morning, before the shops opened and the crowds arrived.

A good time to enjoy its architecture in peace.

If you’d like to round off your walk through the arcade with an exhibition, Fondazione Prada’s Osservatorio is located inside. The masterpieces of the Pinacoteca di Brera

Among Milan’s museums, the Pinacoteca di Brera is a good choice if you want to devote part of your stay to Italian painting. A break in Sempione Park

Behind Sforza Castle, Sempione Park offers a chance to take a break in green surroundings. We recommend taking this walk in fine weather and saving the museums for the hottest hours of the day or rainy days.

11. The columns and Basilica of San Lorenzo

This is another place to visit that offers something different from Milan’s other sights. The Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore dates from late antiquity, between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th century. It is one of Milan’s oldest churches. Dedicated to Saint Lawrence, it was built using materials salvaged from Roman monuments.

In front of the church, you will find the sixteen columns of San Lorenzo. The Fashion Quadrilateral

The street Via Monte Napoleone and the surrounding streets make up the Fashion Quadrilateral. Here you’ll find the major luxury fashion houses, their window displays and a few beautiful palazzi. A stroll through this shopping district is enough if you’re visiting out of curiosity rather than to shop.

The area is close to Brera and San Babila. We recommend this detour if you’re interested in fashion, before heading back to the neighbourhoods where you’ve planned your other visits.

23. San Siro, for football fans

For football fans, a visit to San Siro stadium deserves a dedicated slot in your itinerary. Accessible areas may vary depending on matches, concerts and activities taking place that day.

The stadium is in western Milan, and the M5 line is one way to get there. Our itinerary for visiting Milan in 2 or 3 days covers the essentials, then offers two options for the third day. The timings below are a guide to help you plan; your time slot for The Last Supper determines the order of visits on day 2.

Day 1: the Duomo, La Scala and Brera

Morning at the Duomo and on the terraces

We recommend allowing 2 to 3 hours for the cathedral and its terraces. Three details are particularly worth looking out for:

The golden Madonnina: look out for this statue at the top of the main spire from the terraces.

Saint Bartholomew Flayed: Marco d’Agrate’s sculpture in the choir area. Its depiction of the body is one of the Duomo’s most unusual details.

The meridian line: a thin brass line set into the floor near the entrance, accompanied by the signs of the zodiac. This instrument marks solar noon.

Tickets: book the cathedral and terraces. We were enchanted by the beauty of the lake, its villages and the mountains. You can reach the town of Como from Milan in under an hour, but you’ll need more time to explore the other shores.

There are three ways to get there:

By train: allow around 40 minutes from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni, or just over an hour to Varenna-Esino. For our trip in April, we found a car with Hertz for €50 for four days. We enjoyed its range of museums, its food and its atmosphere.

The city has good connections to France, and low-cost flights can make a trip good value. Remember to compare the cost of the whole journey, though, as flying to Bergamo also means taking a shuttle to Milan.

Once there, you can choose from plenty of museums and art galleries, as well as The Last Supper and the Duomo. And, as is often the case in Italy, we love tucking into the pasta, pizzas and pastries. Our advice is simply to leave time for walks: if you only go from one ticketed attraction to the next, you won’t enjoy the neighbourhoods as much.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How many days should you allow?

We recommend two full days for the main sights and three days to include museums or other neighbourhoods. You can finish in the Navigli district if you still have time. You can add the Monumental Cemetery and the frescoes of San Maurizio during opening hours. It was the most cost-effective way to transport the bikes. The journey flies by as you watch the scenery go past, and the on-board Wi-Fi also lets you get some work done. Milan has cycle lanes, but not on every street, so plan your route accordingly, particularly in areas with tram tracks.

We used BikeMi, the city's bike-sharing scheme, a bit like Vélocub in Bordeaux and Vélib’ in Paris. A subscription costs €4.50 for 24 hours or €9 for a week, with usage charges depending on the bike you choose and the length of your ride.

You can now register on the BikeMi website or app, then use the app to unlock a bike. On a standard bike, the first 30 minutes of each ride are included, after which it costs €0.50 for each additional half-hour, up to two hours. Electric bikes have different rates.

BikeMi is designed for short journeys: you must return the bike to a docking station and must not keep it for more than two consecutive hours. A car mainly adds the hassle of parking and navigating traffic. Hiring a car makes more sense if you are continuing your trip beyond the city; for Lake Como, the train is still a practical option.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How much should you budget?

Allow €500 to €900 for a couple for three days and two nights, sharing a room and excluding travel to and from Milan. That works out at €250 to €450 per person when travelling as a couple; for solo travellers, the room accounts for a larger share of the individual budget. To stay at the lower end of the range, compare accommodation options, choose a few paid attractions and make the most of the neighbourhoods, squares, park and castle courtyards that you can explore for free.

The official price of the standard combined Duomo ticket is €22 with stair access or €26 with lift access, while The Last Supper costs €15 for an admission-only ticket. These are not guided tour prices, which include additional services. Before buying a pass, compare what it covers with the visits you actually plan to make.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What can you do when it rains?

Choose a museum to suit your interests: Brera or the Ambrosiana for painting, the Science Museum for inventions and transport, Leonardo3 for a more compact visit, the Triennale for design or the Prada Foundation for contemporary art. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II also offers a covered place for a stroll. Stick to one major museum per half-day.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which activities are best with children?

For a stay in Milan with children, we recommend alternating sightseeing visits with walks in Sempione Park or along the canals. The Science Museum and Leonardo3 may appeal to children who are curious about inventions. For the Duomo terraces, check the access conditions and rules on pushchairs before choosing your ticket. Consider your children's ages and sensitivities when deciding whether to visit the San Bernardino ossuary.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which visits should you book in advance?

Book your visit to see The Last Supper first, then the Duomo and any guided tours you really want to do. Sort out your accommodation too, along with your transfer if you’re arriving in Bergamo. For the other museums, check the time slots, closing days and ticket conditions. Then leave some free time to explore the neighbourhoods and try our recommended places.

</details>

You now have our suggestions to help you decide what to see and plan your stay in Milan.
