Aboard our 4&#215;4 rental, we explored its <strong>vast wilderness<\/strong>, <strong>incredible wildlife<\/strong> and <strong>geological wonders<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were totally enchanted by this country, and <strong>felt lucky to<\/strong> discover it every day of our road trip. Our <strong>first experience in a rooftop tent<\/strong> gave us an immense sense of freedom. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Namibia is a country where it is easy to <strong>travel independently<\/strong>. To fully enjoy your trip, you will have to<strong>organize<\/strong> it in advance and book your <strong>accommodations <\/strong>and your <strong>vehicle<\/strong> as soon as possible. Is Namibia a dangerous country? <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we have a destination in mind, we systematically consult the <strong>Diplomatie.gouv <\/strong> website.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Namibia, the <strong>site is reassuring<\/strong>, since the first lines indicate that it is a<strong>&#8220;country with a relatively stable political situation and infrastructure<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>3 weeks of travel<\/strong>, we <strong>never felt insecure<\/strong>. I even walked around Windhoek by myself in the middle of the day. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1060824.jpg?fit=920%2C690\" alt=\"Namibia\" class=\"wp-image-3457\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s important to bear in mind that you&#8217;ll be traveling in <strong>remote, sparsely populated <\/strong>areas, so you&#8217;ll need to take a few precautions.<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The risk of theft<\/span>:<\/strong> as everywhere else, you&#8217;ll need to be vigilant in the major cities, <strong>Windhoek, Swakopmund<\/strong>&#8230; Avoid carrying <strong>valuables<\/strong>, <strong>going out at night <\/strong>and leaving your <strong>vehicle unattended<\/strong>.  <br\/><br\/>When we went shopping, we always looked for a supermarket with <strong>customer parking<\/strong>. A security guard usually watches over all customer vehicles, so you can shop with peace of mind! <br\/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Partag&#xE9;-&#xE0;-partir-de-Lightroom-mobile-13.webp\" alt=\"Namibia\" class=\"wp-image-14031\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">          <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2. <\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Transportation risks<\/span>: you<\/strong>&#8216;ll quickly realize that <strong>tarmac roads are a rarity<\/strong>. You will ride mostly on <strong>long dusty tracks<\/strong>. Most of the trails are in good condition and passable with a conventional vehicle.  <br\/><br\/>We advise you <strong>to avoid driving at night<\/strong>, as you will have less visibility on the few <strong>holes <\/strong>on the road and the <strong>wild animals<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our <strong>first day<\/strong>, with the fatigue of the trip, the shopping&#8230; we had <strong>miscalculated our travel time<\/strong>. Risks related to wild animals: <\/span><\/strong> Most roads and trails are lined with <strong>fences<\/strong> to prevent animals from leaving <strong>parks<\/strong> or <strong>private areas<\/strong>. <br\/><br\/>However, we came across an <strong>impala<\/strong> that had managed to escape and was, unfortunately, stranded on the trail.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We had to walk <strong>at a sn<\/strong> ail&#8217;s pace to avoid hitting him, and signalled his position when we came across some reserve guards.  <br\/><br\/><strong>Driving at night<\/strong> is not recommended. <strong>Wild camping is forbidden <\/strong>in this country. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/LRM_EXPORT_182614120941405_20190822_220314662-1.jpeg?fit=920%2C690\" alt=\"Namibia\" class=\"wp-image-3461\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<h2 id=\"namibiepartir\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_When_to_go_to_Namibia\"><\/span>2. When to go to Namibia ? <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>seasons are reversed<\/strong> compared to the northern hemisphere. The year is divided into two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. It&#8217;s possible to travel all year round in Namibia, as <strong>each season has its own advantages<\/strong> for discovering the country.  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\n  <strong>The dry season<\/strong>\n<\/span>From <b>May to September, the climate is dry and the nights cool.<\/b> In the parks, the animals gather at the <strong>few remaining waterholes<\/strong>, so you&#8217;ll have more opportunity to see many animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We went in <strong>August<\/strong>, and saw a lot of <strong>animals and birds<\/strong> for ourselves.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong> Daytime<\/strong> temperatures are a pleasant <strong>25-30 degrees Celsius<\/strong>, while <strong>nights<\/strong> are cooler, around <strong>10 degrees Celsius<\/strong>. We rented a second comforter to add as a blanket for the cooler nights. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The rainy season<\/strong><\/span>, from <strong>November to April, temperatures are warm with frequent thunderstorms, depending on the region.<\/strong> You can spot <strong>migratory birds<\/strong> (such as flamingos\u2026). The vegetation is more lush, the parks are in full bloom and green, but the animals are harder to spot! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#x27a1;&#xfe0f; The month of<strong>October<\/strong>, located between the two seasons, is an ideal month to travel to Namibia, as <strong>temperatures are warm<\/strong> and <strong>rain is still rare<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1070774.jpg?fit=920%2C690\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3462\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<h2 id=\"windhoek\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Why_go_to_Windhoek_the_capital_of_Namibia\"><\/span>3. Why go to Windhoek, the capital of Namibia?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Windhoek<\/strong> is the capital of Namibia with about <strong>300 thousand<\/strong> inhabitants. You will certainly spend and stay there for several reasons: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Place of arrival and departure of your flight<\/span>\n<\/strong>It is the only international airport in the country!<br\/><br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Vehicle Pickup Location<\/span><\/strong>All rental locations are near the airport. It takes longer to pick up an SUV than a standard car, so allow extra time. <br\/><br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Where to Shop for Groceries<\/span><\/strong>Outside of cities, you can only buy groceries at convenience stores located at gas stations or in parks. So we did two big shopping trips\u2014one in <strong>Windhoek<\/strong> and another in <strong>Swakopmund.<br\/><br\/><\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Place to visit<\/span><\/strong> We slept there one night when we came back, so we took advantage of this time to walk around the city. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"lazyblock-conseils-et-hebergements-Z1qxDvk wp-block-lazyblock-conseils-et-hebergements\"><div class=\"conseils-hebergements\"><span class=\"titre-conseils\"><i class=\"fas fa-map-marked-alt\"><\/i>Hotel in Windhoek<\/span>\n<p><p>We highly recommend<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/go\/hotel\/windhoek\/\">Hotel Uhland<\/a> &#8211; the rooms are <strong>spacious<\/strong> and <strong>pleasant<\/strong>. Both indoor and outdoor common areas (with swimming pool) are top-notch! You&#8217;ll feel right at home.  <\/p>\n<p>Numerous restaurants are located nearby, where you can have food delivered, following the advice of your friendly hosts. Located 20 minutes&#8217; walk from the center. Etosha national park: an unforgettable safari &#x2764;&#x2764;&#x2764; <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/safari-in-national-park-detosha-in-namibia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safari in Etosha Park <\/a>is the highlight of our trip to Namibia. It is one <strong>of the largest reserves in Africa<\/strong> that you can explore in <strong>4&#215;4 with a guide or in total autonomy<\/strong>. We keep images full of head of our first safari.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <strong>dry<\/strong> season, from May to September, the <strong>concentration of animals is impressive<\/strong>. As you get closer to the site, the landscape around you will be transformed into <strong>huge sand dunes with incredible colors<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many <strong>points of interest<\/strong> on site, and you should allow two days to explore them all:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Deadvlei<\/strong>: is a clay basin on which lies dead and sun-dried trees. It is a unique place in the mode and photogenic as you can see on the photos below! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/sesriem-explorer-les-dunes-de-sossusvlei\/#sesriemincontournables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Big Daddy <\/a>: Namibia&#8217;s biggest dune, it takes 1h30 to climb early in the morning. Swakopmund and Walvis bay: between desert and ocean &#x2764;&#x2764; <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another surprising place in Namibia! <strong>Swakopmund<\/strong> is a very nice little coastal town, built by German colonists. You&#8217;ll love strolling through the streets and admiring the <strong>old colonial buildings<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then head to <strong>Walvis Bay<\/strong> where <strong>thousands of flamingos <\/strong>have found refuge. It&#8217;s the biggest concentration we&#8217;ve ever seen.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then continue your way, at the level of the lighthouse a huge colony of <strong>sea lions<\/strong> has elected residence.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you drive on <strong>dry sand<\/strong>; we helped a Dutch family whose <strong>4&#215;4 was silted up<\/strong> (they drove too close to the water). They were very scared and were very happy to see us.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s also a great place for water sports, desert tours, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manawa.com\/fr-FR\/activite\/namibie\/swakopmund\/parachutisme\/saut-en-parachute-en-tandem-a-swakopmund-namibie\/4791?_cid=1233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skydiving<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"lazyblock-conseils-et-hebergements-ZEy1jl wp-block-lazyblock-conseils-et-hebergements\"><div class=\"conseils-hebergements\"><span class=\"titre-conseils\"><i class=\"fas fa-map-marked-alt\"><\/i>Hotel in Swakopmund<\/span>\n<p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/na\/swakopmund-sands-swakopmund1.fr.html?aid=1529171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Swakopmund Sands<\/a> Hotel is ideally located in a quiet area, just a 2-minute walk from the ocean and the restaurants on the Swakopmund pier. The hotel is charming and serves a good breakfast. <\/p><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Partag&#xE9;-&#xE0;-partir-de-Lightroom-mobile-12.jpg?fit=920%2C690\" alt=\"Namibia\" class=\"wp-image-3448\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Damaraland_an_incredible_region_%E2%9D%A4%E2%9D%A4\"><\/span>4. Damaraland: an incredible region &#x2764;&#x2764; <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We loved to <strong>explore this region by 4&#215;4<\/strong>, because the landscapes are splendid. It is an <strong>ancient volcanic region<\/strong>. The flat mountains <strong>with their reddish colors<\/strong> will make you think of <strong>the American far-west scenery<\/strong>!  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this region, if you take your time, you&#8217;ll come across many <strong>animals<\/strong> along the way. We preferred <strong>short distances<\/strong> to have time to explore the area.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We advise you to take the <strong>alternate routes<\/strong> to hope to come face to face with <strong>animals<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We observed <strong>a herd of giraffes<\/strong> between <strong>Brangberg and Palmwag <\/strong>, then a <strong>solitary giraffe<\/strong> between <strong>Palmwag and Kamanjab<\/strong> on the way to Etosha.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Partag&#xE9;-&#xE0;-partir-de-Lightroom-mobile-14-1.jpg?fit=920%2C690\" alt=\"Namibia\" class=\"wp-image-3447\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Spitzkoppe_the_rock_formations_%E2%9D%A4_%E2%9D%A4\"><\/span>5. Spitzkoppe: the rock formations &#x2764; &#x2764;  <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still in Damaraland, we loved the <strong>Spitzkoppe<\/strong> site, which means<strong>&#8220;pointed hat<\/strong>&#8220;; it&#8217;s a mountain of orange stones rising to 1,728m.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>rock formations<\/strong> inside the site are <strong>incredible<\/strong>. You can walk around the park and explore the different sites. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/spitzkoppe-1634069_1920.jpg?fit=920%2C609\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3453\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Waterberg_the_plateau_of_many_colors_%E2%9D%A4\"><\/span>6. Waterberg: the plateau of many colors &#x2764;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Waterberg site<\/strong>, a huge plateau <strong>with magnificent colors<\/strong>, composed of<strong>a range of red<\/strong> thanks to the stone that constitutes it. On the ground, the <strong>ochre earth<\/strong> and the <strong>green landscapes<\/strong> will surprise you! <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lodges offer <strong>many hikes on the plateau<\/strong>. You will also be able to observe some animals in the wild, including Impalas and Oryx.
