<strong>walk<\/strong> around Como (approximately 2 kilometres there and back)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1- Start at the magnificent <strong>Villa Olmo<\/strong> (free admission) on the lakeshore, where you can explore both the interior and the gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2 &#8211; Then head to <strong>Piazza Cavour<\/strong> along the waterfront (about a 15-minute walk). Take the opportunity to admire the boats, imagine yourself aboard one of them and enjoy the lovely views across the lake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3- Next, head to the imposing <strong>Cathedral of Saint Mary<\/strong>, <em>Santa Maria Assunta<\/em>, built in the Gothic style (begun in 1396 and completed in 1770). We recommend going inside to admire its architecture and many stained-glass windows. <br><br>You can then stroll along the shopping street. Before heading back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/it\/albergo-firenze-como.en-gb.html?aid=1529171&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2&amp;lang=en-gb\" target=\"_blank\" <strong>villas <\/strong>that are true architectural gems, nestled in lush gardens and, best of all, offering spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closest to Como is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villaolmocomo.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Villa Olmo<\/a>, and the good news is that <strong>admission<\/strong> <strong>is free.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some temporary exhibitions may, however, charge an admission fee. Considered one of the most sumptuous villas on Lake Como, <strong>Villa Olmo<\/strong> was designed by the Italian architect Simone Cantoni and built in 1782. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This majestic villa enjoys wonderful views over splendid grounds featuring elaborate Italian- and English-style gardens. The panoramic views over the lake are splendid, but getting there involves a narrow, winding road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recommend taking the <strong>historic funicular<\/strong> (dating from 1894) up to <strong>Brunate<\/strong>, followed by a walk of around 30 minutes to reach the lighthouse. We highly recommend 2 of them, just 30 minutes north of the town of Como:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/villa-balbianello\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"69110\">Villa Balbianello<\/a><\/strong> will probably look familiar, as it was a filming location for \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoi-pas-nous.com\/en\/star-wars-lake-como\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Star Wars<\/a>: Episode II &#8211; Attack of the Clones\u2019 and \u2018<strong>James Bond<\/strong>: Casino Royale\u2019. It is also<strong> the most visited villa<\/strong> on Lake Como, and we can see why! You can only visit the villa with a guide, who taught us lots about the house and Lake Como. <br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was <strong>one of our favourite visits <\/strong>during our stay. The gardens, with their majestic trees and beautiful flowerbeds, are well worth a visit. They are among the largest and most beautiful around Lake Como. <br><br>One important thing to note is that this <strong>villa is less touristy than the previous one <\/strong>and also offers lovely Excellent produce, excellent wines, all in a welcoming setting!<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Of course, if you read our blog regularly, you will know that we took the opportunity to try some Italian ice cream during our visit. We loved the<strong> artisan ice cream<\/strong> from <strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Guidi <\/strong>ice cream parlour, which you can enjoy in <strong>Piazza Cavour<\/strong> just nearby<strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">.<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"> The flavours are inventive, and we recommend trying \u2018lemon and basil\u2019. They taste every bit as good as they sound.
