When we’re on the road for several weeks or months, having a reliable internet connection has become almost as important as having a valid passport.
Whether we’re looking for last-minute lodging, booking an activity, checking an itinerary, or letting our loved ones know we’re okay, we use the internet every day. That’s why we now almost always set up an affordable travel eSIM before we leave.
During our long trips especially during our tour of Europe in a motorhome or our road trips through Scandinaviawe quickly realized that a simple, random Wi-Fi connection wasn’t enough. When you’re constantly changing countries, accommodations, or itineraries, having data available at all times really makes life easier.

Internet Access During Long-Term Travel: A Real Daily Necessity
On a short trip, you can still get by with the hotel’s Wi-Fi or a few maps downloaded offline. But on trips lasting several months, the internet becomes indispensable.
We use it several times a day to:
- GPS
- the weather
- reservations,
- ferry schedules
- restaurants and cafes
- messages with the family
Since we often work remotely, a reliable internet connection is even more important. Whether we’re replying to emails, publishing an article or posts on our social media accounts, sending photos, or managing the website from abroad, we need a reliable connection.
In fact, that’s one of the points we also cover in our article about our life as digital nomads.
Why We Switched to eSIMs
During our round-the-world trip (in 2016–2017), we would still buy local SIM cards upon arrival whenever we changed countries. On paper, it was simple. In reality, we had to find a store, figure out the plans, sometimes show ID, swap out the SIM card, and keep the old one somewhere without losing it.
With an eSIM, everything goes much more smoothly. You set it up before you leave, right from your phone, and it activates once you arrive. When you arrive late at night at an airport or head straight out onto the road, it’s a real convenience.
We also keep our regular SIM card in the phone, which lets us keep our main number for important calls or two-factor authentication. For us, that’s one of the biggest advantages of eSIMs when traveling.
The real bonus: a long-term plan
When you’re traveling for a long time, small data plans that last just a few days quickly become a hassle. You have to keep track of your data usage, top up regularly, or buy a new plan at each stop.
A long-term data plan eliminates that stress. You start with a data allowance that lasts for several weeks—or even several months—and you don’t have to worry about it every other day. This is especially convenient on a road trip, when your days are already packed with driving, sightseeing, and planning for the next day.
For us, that’s the main benefit: having peace of mind. We know we can get online if we need to change our itinerary, book a place to stay at the last minute, or check important information while on the road.
A practical solution when traveling through several countries
On a long trip, you don’t always stay in just one country. During our tour of Europe, just as on our trip through Scandinavia, we crossed several borders in a short period of time. On this kind of trip, having to switch SIM cards or data plans in every country quickly becomes a hassle.
eSIMs with regional or international coverage are designed to prevent exactly that. You can use the same connection solution across multiple destinations without having to worry about it too much.
To properly prepare for this type of trip, we also continue to download certain maps offline before departure. This is still useful in more isolated areas, particularly in the mountains or in certain remote corners.
Better Manage Your Data Budget
Internet expenses aren’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when planning a trip. However, roaming charges or top-ups purchased in a hurry can quickly add up.
With an eSIM chosen before departure, the cost is clearer. You know exactly how much you’re spending, how much data you have, and for how long. This helps you avoid unpleasant surprises and save your budget for what really matters: activities, accommodations, restaurants, or little treats while you’re there.
Our Tips Before Installing a Travel eSIM
Before choosing an eSIM, we always consider a few simple criteria:
- the validity period of the package;
- the included data allowance;
- the countries covered;
- the option to activate the eSIM before departure;
- compatibility with our phone;
- ease of installation.
💡 Our tip: Don’t necessarily choose the cheapest plan if you’re going on a long trip. It’s often better to get a little more data right from the start rather than having to top up in the middle of your trip, especially if you use GPS, social media, or booking apps a lot.

A small habit that makes a big difference
These days, setting up an eSIM is part of our pre-trip routine. We get our documents ready, check our insurance, download offline maps… and set up our data plan.
It’s not the most obvious part of a trip, but it’s definitely one of the things that saves us the most trouble once we’re there. Being able to arrive in a country and immediately use your phone to look up directions, call a place to stay, or book transportation really changes the experience.
For a long-term trip, a road trip, or a multi-country itinerary, an eSIM with a long-term plan makes all the difference. It lets you travel with greater peace of mind, manage your budget more effectively, and stay connected without relying solely on public Wi-Fi.
