Troll Road or Trollstigen: the scenic route to take in Norway

a glass railing overlooking a valley

The Troll Route, or Trollstigen, is one of Norway’s most spectacular and iconic scenic routes. The road is famous for its 11 hairpin bends, which we were able to admire from a platform.

Wondering where the Troll Road is? Is it open? You’ve come to the right place!

Here’s our advice on how to make the most of the Troll Road during your road trip in Norway!

Where is the Troll Trail in Norway?

The Troll Road lies to the north of the small village of Geiranger and to the south of the town of Alesund.

From the south, after crossing a plain, the road suddenly curves down into the valley, which is quite impressive.

Points of interest on the Troll Route

As is often the case in Norway, beautiful structures are provided so that you can enjoy the landscape to the full:

  • Trollstigen visitor center: this building and its superb observation platforms offer incredible panoramic views of the hairpin bends, valley and surrounding peaks.

Several trails allow you to gain height away from the crowds.

We stayed there for an hour or so to take in the view and wait for the tourist buses to leave to give us some space!

A large free parking lot is adjacent.
  • The Stigfossen waterfall: the second point of interest, and not the least, is that one of the most impressive waterfalls in the region, it passes through the visitor center and plunges over 320 meters, passing under a bridge on the road. The gentle sound of the waterfall makes the place peaceful despite the world.

Is the Troll Road open?

If you’re traveling from June to August, the road will certainly be open, the snow will have melted and the weather conditions will be favorable.

On the other hand, if you’re traveling outside this period, the site to add to your favorites during your road trip in Norway is the following: Vegvesen Trafikk There’s also a mobile application.

It’s a service provided by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration that informs drivers about traffic conditions in Norway.

You can change the language of the site at the bottom of the page, then click on the map to see if the route you want to take is open.

Tips for your visit

  • What’s the best time? we advise you to take it around 1pm, as you’ll pass fewer vehicles and especially fewer buses. We passed 5 vehicles on our descent.
  • How to get there? It’s best to bring your own vehicle. Day trips by bus are available from the town of Alesund.

➡️Voir prices and availability for an organized tour of the Troll Route from Alesund

  • Driving conditions: be prepared for narrow, winding roads, as is often the case in Norway. The good thing is that, on the whole, drivers travel at only a few kilometers per hour on this road!

Our verdict on the famous Trollstigen

This is clearly one of our favorite scenic routes on our Norway road trip. The view from the platform is really amazing. If you’re coming from the south like us, you’ll cross a plateau, still covered in snow in June, before arriving at the visitor center and waterfall.

Take the opportunity to visit the famous Geiranger fjord to the south and the less spectacular Atlantic route to the north.

We spent 2 months in Norway, so check out our other articles about this incredible country.
