A one-day fjord cruise from Bergen: our best experience

Planning to visit Bergen and hoping to fit in a fjord cruise during your day of sightseeing? Wondering which fjord to choose? We had the same question when planning our stay in the capital of the fjords, so you’re in the right place!

A fjord cruise is definitely a must-do during your stay in Bergen. Here’s all the information you need to plan and book your boat trip.

Our best fjord cruise from Bergen

There are several options for visiting the fjords from Bergen.

There are 2 fjords near Bergen:

  • Osterfjord
  • Sognefjord

Here’s the cruise we chose for a day trip from Bergen, and why we picked it.

Exploring Osterfjord: an unforgettable cruise

Why did we choose this cruise?

  • Osterfjord is the easiest fjord to reach from Bergen. Many cruises leave Bergen harbour for the village of Mostraumen, at the far end of the fjord. We chose this option to keep the sailing time before reaching the fjord to a minimum. After 30 minutes on the water, we were already at its entrance.
  • The company Rødne Fjord Cruise, which runs the cruise, has an excellent reputation. The cruise operates in both summer and winter.
  • The price is reasonable for this type of activity in Norway: expect to pay around €70 per adult

What to expect on the boat trip from Bergen

We boarded a beautiful boat at Bergen harbour, near the fish market. We first admired the lovely view of the Bryggen district before setting off to explore the fjord.

Entering a fjord by boat is always an impressive experience. We felt tiny surrounded by the towering cliffs.

For 3 hours 30 minutes, we sailed along the fjord’s tranquil waters, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. This boat trip offers stunning views of Norway’s natural beauty, with carefully chosen stops to admire the most impressive views.

➡️ As you might expect, this cruise is popular, so we recommend booking your tickets for an Osterfjord cruise online in advance (around €70 per person), especially during the tourist season, as places on each boat are limited.

Bergen, Sognefjord and Flam cruise

A second option is to cruise along the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord.

From Bergen, you can choose a full-day return cruise (a 12-hour excursion) to explore this part of Norway, with a stop in the village of Flam. The fjord is 1 hour 30 minutes from Bergen, so the time spent sailing before you reach it can feel a little long.
