Wondering what to do in Lagos, Portugal? During our road trip through the Algarve, we stopped in this town in the western part of the region, known for the cliffs and caves of Ponta da Piedade, its beaches with turquoise waters, and its lively historic center.
With its natural beauty, the sea, and local life, Lagos is also an excellent base for exploring the western Algarve. In this guide, we share the places we’ve discovered, our favorite spots, our thoughts, and practical information to help you plan a two- or three-day trip.

- By car: It generally takes between 1 hour and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Faro Airport, depending on traffic and the route
- Without a car: Lagos is served by the regional train and by buses. The train station is located behind the marina, within walking distance of downtown

- Enjoy the beaches of Praia dos Estudantes, Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, Porto de Mós, and Meia Praia

- Once there: the town center, the marina, and several beaches are within walking distance. Buses and a small tourist train also provide access to certain beaches and the Ponta da Piedade area.
Explore the caves and cliffs of Ponta da Piedade
With its natural arches, sea caves, and rock pillars sculpted by erosion, Ponta da Piedade is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Lagos. To fully appreciate its beauty, we recommend combining a boat trip with a walk along the top of the cliffs.

If there’s one activity you shouldn’t miss in Lagos, it’s the boat tour along the cliffs and through the sea caves. It was our favorite part of the trip, because the sea reveals passages and views that are impossible to see from the coastal trail.
On board, the guide points out the main rock formations and adjusts the route based on sea conditions. Even though the trip is short, it offers a very different perspective from the one seen from the boardwalks.
Some caves are accessible only from the sea. Swimming near the cliffs can be dangerous due to currents, swells, and passing boats. Always follow local guidelines.
Explore Ponta da Piedade from land
In addition to the boat tour, we highly recommend exploring Ponta da Piedade on foot. From the historic center, head to Praia da Batata and then gradually follow the coastline. The boardwalks connect the Praia do Pinhão area to Praia do Canavial, passing through Praia Dona Ana and the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse.
The trail offers numerous views of the coves, arches, and the ocean. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, and appropriate footwear, especially if you leave the boardwalks to take the more uneven trails.

Our most beautiful beaches in Lagos
The beaches of Lagos are among the most beautiful in the Algarve. Some are tucked away between the cliffs, while others feature long stretches of sand that are easier to access.
- Praia dos Estudantes: our favorite, a small, secluded beach known for its rock arch. The main access is from Praia da Batata through a tunnel carved into the cliff. The beach remains accessible, but the sandy area shrinks significantly at high tide. The passage under the arch toward Praia do Pinhão is only passable at very low tide.
- Praia do Camilo: a small cove with spectacular scenery, accessible via a long flight of stairs. Arrive early during peak season, as space on the sand is limited.
- Praia Dona Ana: one of Lagos’s most iconic beaches, surrounded by golden cliffs and rock formations.
- Praia da Batata: the beach closest to the historic center, perfect for a quick break or for heading to Praia dos Estudantes.
- Praia de Porto de Mós: Larger and farther from the center, it’s a great spot for swimming and long walks on the sand.
- Meia Praia: This long beach, stretching over 4 km, lies on the other side of the marina. Its vast expanse contrasts with the small, cliff-lined coves.
We’re really taken with the small beaches nestled among the rocks. They offer a striking setting, but their size changes with the tides, and they fill up quickly in the summer.
The historic center of Lagos
The historic center of Lagos is one of the most pleasant places to explore on foot in the Algarve. We loved getting lost in the colorful, cobblestone streets, strolling along the ramparts, and then making our way to the marina.
Among the sites worth visiting, the Ponta da Bandeira Fort guards the entrance to the old harbor. Nearby are the Castelo dos Governadores, sections of the city walls, the Santo António Church, the Dr. José Formosinho Municipal Museum, and Praça Infante Dom Henrique. The building that once housed the slave market is now home to a museum dedicated to that history.
The center is also a great place to eat, have a drink, or simply stroll around at the end of the day after a trip to the beach. Our tried-and-true recommendations are listed a little further down in the article.

In Lagos, we tried out several simple, welcoming spots to have dinner, sample a Portuguese specialty, or take a break between sightseeing stops.
- The Garden : a spot nestled in a lovely garden, perfect for having a drink or grabbing a burger.

How to get to Lagos
Lagos is located about 85 km from Faro Airport. By car, the trip usually takes between 1 hour and 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on traffic and the route you choose—either the A22 or the EN125.
It’s also possible to get to Lagos without a car. Regional trains run from Faro and other cities in the Algarve, and there are several bus routes. Once you arrive, the train station is located behind the marina, and the historic center is easy to explore on foot.
To explore the more remote beaches and continue your road trip to Sagres, Alvor, or the rest of the Algarve, a car is still the most convenient option.

How long can I stay in Lagos?
We recommend staying at least two nights in Lagos—and ideally three nights—if you want to enjoy the beaches and sightseeing without rushing.

This format allows you to explore the main attractions:

- Explore Ponta da Piedade on foot;
- take a boat trip to the caves;
- Enjoy a beach near Lagos.
Three Nights and Three Days in Lagos
This is the schedule we recommend for:
- alternate between walks, beaches, and boat trips;
- see Ponta da Piedade at different times of the day, especially at sunset;
- take the time to stroll around town and try out a few great spots;
- Plan a trip to another destination in the western Algarve.
Lagos is a great base for exploring the western part of the region. Sagres is to the west, whileAlvor and Armação de Pêra are to the east.
Our Take on Lagos
Lagos is definitely one of our favorite places in the Algarve. We love the balance between the spectacular scenery of Ponta da Piedade, the beaches, the narrow streets of the historic center, and the opportunities for boat trips.
We recommend staying there for two to three nights. This will give you enough time to enjoy the beaches, take a boat trip, and explore the cliffs on foot, without turning your stay into a race against the clock.
