Stockholm, the Swedish capital, is known not only for its picturesque islands and historic buildings, but also for its unique metro system.
The Stockholm metro is a veritable art gallery, with 90 stations decorated by some 100 artists. Don’t hesitate to embark on a treasure hunt for the prettiest resorts! When we visited the city, we added a few stations to our itinerary. In our opinion, these are the resorts not to be missed.
1. T-centralen station
This is the station not to be missed on your visit to Stockholm T-Centralen, the network’s central station, is the point of convergence of Stockholm’s main metro lines. During your stay in Stockholm, you’ll certainly want to stop off here.
Inaugurated in 1957, this station is not only a crucial hub for travelers, but also a spectacular underground art gallery.
In 1975, artist Per Olof Ultvedt transformed the quays with his iconic blue murals. These works, depicting workers in action, evoke the construction of the metro and pay tribute to the city’s builders. The blue vaults, adorned with floral and plant motifs, create a soothing atmosphere.
2. Thorildsplan Station: A Pixelated Journey
Thorildsplan this resort, will transport you back to the video games of the 80s, where the stars were Pac Man and Super Mario. Inspired by pixel aesthetics, this station is decorated with mosaics reminiscent of 1980s video games. Artist Lars Arrhenius has transformed the station into a visual playground, where pixelated patterns depict scenes from everyday life and stylized cityscapes.
It’s a great way to stay warm in Stockholm in winter.
3. Radhuset Station: Underground Exploration
Rådhuset, on the Blue Line in the Kungsholmen district, is a station distinguished by its raw design and architectural elements reminiscent of an underground cavern. Inaugurated in 1975 and designed by artist Sigvard Olsson, this station evokes the atmosphere of an archaeological dig.
Exposed stone walls, rusted metal structures and subtle lighting effects create a mysterious yet historic ambience. Rådhuset offers a veritable immersion in the past, while at the same time being rooted in the hustle and bustle of modern urban life.
