Our tips for planning your visit to Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences

Of all the places you can visit in Valencia, the City of Arts and Sciences is definitely a must-see. We loved this complex, where science, nature and art come together to create a unique space for everyone to learn and discover. Yes, really, you’ll see!

Wondering how to get there? Which museum should you prioritise? We had the same questions, as the City of Sciences is made up of several buildings and museums.

To help you plan your visit, we’re sharing all our tips. From the impressive Príncipe Felipe Science Museum to the extraordinary Oceanogràfic, there’s something for all tastes and ages.

5 must-sees at the City of Arts and Sciences

Even if you don’t want to visit the museums, we recommend at least going for a look, as these futuristic buildings, designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, have become symbols of Valencia. We absolutely loved it, and it’s on the way to the beach too.

An added bonus is the large pools all around, with the architecture reflected in the water. It’s absolutely beautiful! On our two trips to Valencia, we came here first to visit the Oceanogràfic and then, the second time, to visit the Science Museum.

You obviously won’t be able to visit all the museums in a weekend, but we recommend at least coming here to explore this vast space on foot or by bike and walk through the Umbracle. If you only have time for one museum, make it the Oceanogràfic. It’s an ideal activity in winter or when it’s raining, of course.

The Oceanogràfic: Europe’s largest aquarium

It’s Europe’s largest aquarium, faithfully recreating a range of marine habitats. Walk through underwater tunnels and discover sharks, penguins, dolphins and much more. Although we’re not fans of aquariums and zoos, this one is worth a visit. Especially as it genuinely aims to raise awareness among as many people as possible about protecting marine environments and the environment more generally.

We’ve written a full article to help you plan your visit to Valencia’s aquarium.

We recommend booking your skip-the-line tickets online to avoid queuing at the ticket office. (€33.70 per person – €25 for children aged 4 to 12))

Family-friendly and educational activities

Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences is not just a place of discovery for curious minds; it’s also a paradise for families.

With a wealth of workshops, interactive exhibitions and educational programmes, it offers an enriching experience for all ages.

Workshops and interactive exhibitions for children

There are plenty of workshops designed especially for children. Imagine your children building a bridge, taking part in an archaeological dig or discovering the mysteries of DNA. Each workshop is an adventure, a chance to play and learn at the same time.

Here are a few examples of the activities the museums usually offer:

  • Robotics workshop: In this workshop, children can learn the basics of robotics by building and programming small robots. It’s a fun way to introduce them to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. (Science Museum)
  • Aquatic show: these shows are offered at Océanografic.
  • Screenings of animated films or wildlife documentaries for children, such as Toy Story or Animal Kingdom, at Hemisfèric
  • Journey into space: A workshop that takes children on a journey through space. They can learn more about planets, stars and galaxies, and even explore concepts in space physics through interactive activities. (Science Museum)

These workshops and exhibitions are designed to be both educational and entertaining, encouraging curiosity and hands-on learning among young visitors. Bear in mind that exhibitions and workshops may vary depending on the museums’ programmes.

When should you visit?

To avoid the crowds, consider visiting on a weekday or early in the day. The summer months are often the busiest, so if you prefer a quieter experience, opt for spring or autumn. These are also the best times to visit Valencia.

There are also plenty of places to eat within the City of Sciences, but you can bring a picnic and enjoy the surrounding green spaces too. Finally, for a truly comprehensive experience, consider a guided tour, which offers a deeper insight into this fascinating complex.

Walks in the Turia Gardens

The Turia Gardens, right next to the City of Sciences, are the perfect place for a peaceful stroll. This huge park stretches across the city and was created in the former bed of the River Turia. The river was diverted after frequent flooding in the city, and its former bed was then turned into a park. What a great idea! We love cities with proper, spacious green areas.

This park is a meeting place for locals who come to exercise, families enjoying picnics or birthday parties, walkers, dancers… At weekends, it's lively and it's the place to be!

  • Burritos: a Mexican restaurant (we fancied a change from Spanish food) using good-quality ingredients, right next to the City of Arts and Sciences.
  • El Trompo: enjoy excellent paella right on the seafront. In short, the perfect spot, so remember to book! The City of Sciences is only 2km from the beaches.
