The Mercado Central is not just a market, it’s an architectural masterpiece. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, in 1914 to be precise, this building is a symbol ofArt Nouveau, with its richly ornate facades and luminous interior evoking an era of grandeur and innovation.
Colorful stained glass windows, detailed mosaics and metal structures, which are distinctive elements of this artistic style, give the market an atmosphere that is both historic and modern.
The market’s structure, designed by architects Francisco Guàrdia Vial and Alexandre Soler, is a tribute to tradition and progress. They have succeeded in creating a space that, while respecting Valencian heritage, incorporates avant-garde design elements. With an area of over 8,000 square meters, the Mercado Central is one of Europe’s largest markets, offering a spacious, airy space for vendors’ stalls and shoppers’ aisles. We loved walking around.

The market’s wrought-iron vaults and columns rise majestically, providing not only a visual spectacle for visitors, but also serving as a testament to the industrial era and Spanish craftsmanship.
Discover the Gastronomic Treasures of Valence
As soon as you enter the market, we were greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors and an intoxicating mix of fragrances. From fresh fruit and vegetables to cheese stalls, brilliant fish and mouth-watering charcuterie, every corner of the market is a celebration of Valencian gastronomy. It’s a sensory delight reminiscent of traditional Mediterranean markets, but with a unique twist.
The market is the ideal place to discover local produce. Don’t miss the Iberian ham, the local olives and, of course, the juicy Valencian oranges. Compared to other destinations, Valencia stands out for the freshness and quality of its local produce.

Our tips for a memorable visit
To make the most of your visit, we recommend arriving between 10am and midday. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you’ll also have the opportunity to see the market between two moments, after the locals have finished shopping and just before dinner is prepared. Don’t forget to leave enough time to explore every nook and cranny and to sample the specialities on offer. Visiting Valencia is very time-consuming, so you can stay for a good hour if, like me, you like to sample everything.
Beyond the Market: Explore the Surroundings
After your visit, take a stroll through the surrounding streets. Here you’ll find charming cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy the fresh produce you’ve bought. It’s the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere and enjoy the daily life of the Valencians. We set down 100m south of the market, in a small square with a children’s park. Perfect for eating and letting our daughter go on the swing after a morning of sightseeing. You can easily visit the Silk Lodge, just across the street, and the famous Cathedral Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, 400 meters away.
