Where to sleep in Naples? Our favorite neighborhoods and best addresses

Looking for a place to stay during your stay in Naples? Here are our favorite neighborhoods to stay in and our best hotel addresses. We also explain which neighborhoods to avoid in Naples.

The best places to stay in Naples? [carte]

During your stay in Naples, we recommend that you devote 1 day to visiting the city and then 1 or more to visiting archaeological sites or natural sites (island or volcano).

The best place to stay is close to a metro station, or next to the port for quick ferry connections to the islands.

List of our favorite neighborhoods and places to stay in Naples :

  1. Centro Scorico: historic center ideal for sightseeing (blue on our map)
  2. Quartier espagno: 100% Neapolitan neighborhood (in pink on our map)
  3. Vomero: a quiet neighborhood for families (purple on our map)
  4. Chiaia and Santa Lucia: seaside and upmarket districts (green on our map)

1. Centro Scorico: the historic center for sightseeing

This is the historic district you can’t avoid during your stay in Naples. Centro Scorico in Italian translates into “historic center” in French.

We like it above all for its location close to the station and the port, so we think it’s an ideal neighborhood for visiting Naples and the surrounding area. You can easily reach Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius by train or bus, and the islands by ferry.

This district is split in two by the main Spaccanapoli street. Here, you’ll feel the weight of the centuries, with Roman and Greek influences everywhere. The district boasts numerous palaces and churches listed asUNESCO World Heritage sites. It was also from here that we visited the underground city of Naples.

If you’re looking for accommodation in Naples, don’t hesitate to choose one close to the historic center. We advise you to read the reviews carefully, as Naples is one of the noisiest cities we’ve visited!

Favourite

We’ve found a little nugget we’d recommend, the Hotel Garibaldi Rooms. The location is ideal, right next to the main train station and the airport shuttle stop right in the historic center, so you can do everything on foot.

The room was nicely decorated and clean, with double-glazed windows. In short, an excellent address offering good value for money! We slept there for 3 nights in a quiet place.

Chic address

Artemisia Domus: a beautiful, confidential hotel in the heart of the historic center, with huge, comfortable rooms. And a very quiet hotel, which is very important in Naples, as the city is very (too) noisy.

2. Spanish Quarter: 100% Neapolitan

This is one of our favorite neighborhoods in Naples! The Spanish Quarter (Quartieri Spagnoli), aUNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in the north of Naples, a stone’s throw from the historic center.

This lively, colorful neighborhood is typical of Naples, with houses of just a few stories forming narrow streets, laundry on every balcony, Vespas on every corner… and the good news is that it’s shady in summer.

Some time ago, this place had a bad reputation, but today that’s no longer the case. Numerous restaurants(Pizzeria 400 Gradi is one of the city’s best pizzerias) and accommodations have made this area their home. In fact, it’s the perfect place to go for a drink.

Here, the star is Diego Maradona, the famous soccer player. He’s on every wall, and there’s even a café dedicated to him.

Small price €.

Leone Suites Toledo: the location is perfect for visiting the city, in the heart of the Spanish Quarter, close to the historic center and very close to the TOLEDO metro station. The apartment is very quiet, which again is important in Naples.

3. Vomero: a quiet neighborhood for families

Located on a hill to the northwest of Naples, this district offers a very different architecture to that of central Naples.

If you’re staying in Naples for several days, this is a pleasant area to visit. One of the main sights is the Castello Sant’Elmo, which offers a magnificent panorama of Naples (Via Spaccanapoli divides the historic center into 2 parts) and the surrounding area. This district is also home to the San Martino Charterhouse, a monastery converted into an art museum.

It’s a more airy, quieter neighborhood, making it a great option for families.

In the quiet

Suite Scarlatti: this accommodation is located in a quiet family neighborhood, away from the hustle and bustle of the historic center, in a magnificent historic building with high ceilings. The metro is a 5-minute walk away. In short, a great address.

4. Chiaia and Santa Lucia: seaside and chic districts

Located on the seafront, to the south of the historic center, the Chiaia and Santa Lucia districts are the best places to stay by the sea.

Staying in these areas means you’ll have easy access to the following points of interest: Castel Nuovo, Galleria Umberto I and Piazza del Pleblicito.

In this part of town, due to its proximity to the seafront, hotels are more luxurious and therefore more expensive. If you’d like to treat yourself, some accommodations offer top-of-the-range facilities, including swimming pools, Jacuzzis and rooftops…

Another point of interest is that the Santa Lucia district is close to the port of departure of many ferries to the islands in the Bay of Naples, including the incredible Isle of Capri, which is quite convenient for exploring Naples’ surroundings.

Seaside

Famigi: a great address for visiting Naples, just a stone’s throw from the seaside!

Our top 3 accommodations in Naples

We advise you to book your accommodation as far in advance as possible to ensure you have the widest choice and the best hotels, as Naples is a very popular city in high season. Which is understandable, with so much to do around it!

Are there any neighborhoods to avoid in Naples?

On the whole, as in all big cities, it’s important to bear in mind that, as tourists passing through, we’re easy targets for pickpockets.

In Naples, the hustle and bustle and scooter traffic are such that you need to be extra vigilant to avoid snatch-and-grab robberies. When using public transport, always keep an eye on your bag and close it securely.

The area to avoid is the Scampia district, 20 minutes by public transport to the north, which is a hotbed of drug trafficking in Naples. It’s pretty far from the center, so you’ll never end up there by chance anyway, as there are no tourist sites to see.

We hope you enjoy your trip to Naples!
