La Rochelle is one of our favorite destinations on the Atlantic coast for a short vacation. So we’ve had the chance to try out many campgrounds and vacation rentals during our various stays in La Rochelle.
From Paris, where we lived for a few years, we were only a few hours by train or car away from La Rochelle, where we could enjoy its beaches and events. Then, with our motorhome, we loved exploring the Atlantic coast.
We list below our favorite campsites in La Rochelle and the surrounding area, along with useful information (proximity to beaches, swimming pool, water park, activities on offer, location…). Our aim is to provide you with all the information you need to choose the campsite that best meets your expectations for your vacation in La Rochelle.
We’ve also written a comprehensive article about La Rochelle, with all our tips for making the most of the city.

Our top 10 on our map
Due to its urban density, La Rochelle offers few downtown camping options. We’ve listed the campsites in the immediate vicinity of La Rochelle’s Old Port and towers.
For those wishing to stay in the heart of this great city, vacation homes offer an attractive alternative. These residences offer comfortably equipped apartments with kitchens, allowing visitors to prepare their own meals, and often feature swimming pools, adding a relaxing touch to the urban experience.
For those in search of sea air, the Atlantic coast south of La Rochelle is home to charming little seaside resorts such as Chatelaillon, Angoulins and Fouras, which are ideal destinations for enjoying the pleasures of the beach around La Rochelle. However, it is important to note that bathing in these areas is best done at high tide. At low tide, the Pertuis d’Antioche, located between Oléron and Ré, reveals a significant amount of silt, which can make swimming less enjoyable.
A final option for staying close to La Rochelle: the island of Ré offers an excellent alternative. Located just a few kilometers from La Rochelle, this picturesque island offers several campsites, combining the natural beauty and tranquility of the island with the convenient proximity of the city.
A quick note before we start: obviously, we didn’t test all the campsites around Rochelle. This selection has been made from among those we have tested and those that have been recommended to us. Feel free to leave us a comment at the end of the article with your favorite campsites to share with other readers.
