History: a natural wonder shaped over millions of years

Discovered in the late 1950s, the Caves of Nerja are now one of Spain’s most impressive underground complexes. The network stretches for several kilometers, although only part of it is accessible to the public in order to preserve the most fragile areas.

Some rooms reach impressive dimensions, giving you a real sense of being in an underground cathedral.

What you’ll discover on the tour

The cave

The tour takes you through several rooms. The tour is progressive and well laid out with staircases, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the volumes and natural formations without any particular difficulty. The audio guide makes it easy to get your bearings.

One of the highlights of the visit is the discovery of the vast central chambers, featuring monumental geological formations, including a natural column over 30 metres high. The overall impression is one of immensity and an underground cathedral.

The virtual reality room

We loved this immersive experience, which is a real complement to the classic tour. It gives you a better understanding of how the caves were formed and how they have evolved over time. It’s a real plus for adults and children alike, lasting around ten minutes.

Nerja Museum

Included in the ticket, the museum provides an in-depth look at the historical and scientific dimension of the caves. You’ll discover elements linked to ancient human occupation, as well as information on archaeological research carried out on the site.

⚠️ Please note, however, that the museum is not located at the entrance to the caves, but in downtown Nerja, and closes relatively early, usually around 4pm.

Practical advice

  • Don’t forget to bring your own wired or Bluetooth headphones before your visit. Having your own headphones will enable you to follow the explanations calmly and enjoy the visit to the full, especially during busy periods.
  • Bring good shoes (trainers). This is a safe, well-maintained trail, but with occasional wet patches, steps and slight inclines.
  • You can bring your own picnic. Tables are available on site. The site also boasts a large outdoor area and children’s playground, ideal for families.
  • 🎟️ Book your ticket online via the GetYourGuide platform, which offers the same rates as the official website, with the added advantage of free cancellation or date modification up to the day before, providing real flexibility in the event of program changes.

Is the visit really worth it?

Yes, without hesitation. The discovery is spectacular from the very first rooms, with a succession of impressive volumes and monumental natural formations. The variety of spaces, the size of the cavities and the geological richness make for a truly memorable visit. The French audio guide is superb.

Originally from the Dordogne, where caves and chasms are part of the landscape, I’ve been visiting them since I was a child. I must have visited the Proumeyssac chasm near Sarlat a dozen times. Yet the Grottes de Nerja managed to surprise me. They offer a different scale, impressive volumes and a presentation that has nothing to envy the underground sites of the Périgord.

❤️ Another highlight of the visit is the virtual reality film, which is a real bonus.

How do I get there? & Guided tours from Malaga

  • From the town of Nerja: the caves are very close to the town center. Public buses take you to the entrance in around 10 minutes. You can also take the little red tourist train, a practical and pleasant option, especially with children.
  • By car: easy access via the freeway, exit 292. Pay parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the cave entrance, at a cost of around 2 euros. Remember to bring 1 euro coins. Renting a car is worthwhile if you want to explore the surrounding area, including the lovely white village of Frigiliana, or other sites in the region such as Caminito del Rey.

  • From Malaga by bus: there are regular bus services from Malaga bus station and port to Nerja. The journey takes around 1.5 hours, making it easy to organize a day trip. Info and booking on Alsa.com
  • Organized excursions: there are excursions departing from Málaga, Torremolinos and Benalmadena, including transport to the Nerja Caves and usually to the nearby white village of Frigiliana. This is an ideal solution if you prefer to avoid the car and take advantage of turnkey organization.

Where is the Nerja cave?

The Nerja cave is located in southern Spain, Andalusia, on the eastern Costa del Sol, in the immediate vicinity of the town of Nerja. More precisely, it lies at the entrance to the village of Maro, about 3 km from the center of Nerja and about 50 km east of Malaga.

The Nerja Caves are the perfect complement to a wider Andalusian itinerary. They are an ideal complement to a visit to Malaga, whether to explore its historic center or visit the Picasso Museum. Further inland, Ronda impresses with its vertiginous bridge and landscapes, while Granada is a must-see for its heritage and the Alhambra.
