lofoten islands norway village

Looking for a place to stay during your stay in the Lofoten Islands ? Is staying in a Rorbu worth it? We had the same questions when planning our trip.

To make the most of your vacation and visit the archipelago’s must-sees, it’s important to find one or more carefully located accommodations.

To help you make the most of your stay, we’ve put together some tips on where to stay in Norway’s Lofoten Islands, along with our best hotel addresses.

Where to stay in Lofoten? + card

The archipelago is divided into 4 islands, as you can see on the map below:

  • Moskenes Island (in yellow on our map) with the famous villages of Reine and A (pronounced 0), as well as hikes to Mount Ryten and Reinebringen.
  • Flakstad Island (in pink on our map) with the lovely white-sand beaches of Ramberg and Skagsanden
  • Vestvågøy island (blue on our map) with the beautiful Offersøykammen hike
  • Austvåg Island (purple on our map) with the villages ofHenningsvær and Svolvær and the Trollfjord (the fjord of the Lofoten Islands).

As you can see from our map, most of the things to see and do are located on Moskenes Island.

If you’d like some ideas for things to do on the Lofoten Islands, take a look at our article on the best things to do on the Lofoten Islands.

To make the most of the archipelago, we recommend that you choose several waterfall points.

Note that roads in Lofoten are narrow and speed limits are low (60km/h on average), so although distances between the various sites of interest are not very great, your travel will be relatively slow.

If you’re staying around 1 week in the Lofoten Islands, we recommend that you select 2 or 3 hotels / Rorbuers / apartments during your stay, to easily get around the archipelago by car:

  • 1 on the island of Moskenes, where there’s the most to do, for easy access to Reine, hiking and the white sandy beaches of the north of the island. (4 nights)
  • 1 on the island ofAustvåg, to explore Henningsvaer and Trollfjord (3 nights)

Our advice when choosing accommodation in Lofoten Islands :

On the Lofoten Islands, as everywhere else, you’ll find hotels and apartments for rent, the only difference being that you can sleep in a Rorbu. We’ll explain the differences between the homes below:

  • Rorbuer (or Rorbu in the singular): renovated, fully-equipped old fishermen’s huts (with kitchen).
  • Hotel: often with shared kitchen
  • Apartment: the ideal place to cook for yourself

On the Lofoten Islands, as elsewhere in Norway, accommodation prices can be surprisingly high. It’s important to remember that the cost of living in Norway is generally 30% higher than in France.

For pleasant, well-placed accommodation, we recommend a budget of between €150 and €200 per night.

Prices tend to rise as you approach the south of the archipelago, particularly onMoskenes Island.

During the high tourist season (between July and August), we advise you to book your accommodation in advance.

➡️Un Last but not least: choosing a home with a kitchen means you can prepare your own meals, and save a lot of money in the process.

If you’d like to visit the Lofoten Islands without breaking the bank, we’ve devoted an article to our budget and our tips for visiting the archipelago without blowing your budget.

Where to sleep in a camper van or van in the Lofoten Islands?

We also spent a few nights bivouacking, and we’re sharing a few Park4night spots with you.

We’re not going to lie to you, the Lofoten Islands aren’t one of the best places in Norway for wilderness bivouacs, as the spots are generally along the A10, which is quite busy, and the parking lots are really small.

Here are the spots where we slept during our road trip to the Lofoten Islands:

  • Vaeroy Island : parking lot at the old airstrip (north of the island)
  • Moskenes Island: park4night #131988 Sund I Lofoten, just a few places off the main road, ideal for travelling south.
  • Vestvågøy island: park4night #83305, again just a few spaces off the main road, near Haukland beach
  • Austvåg Island: park4night #86716, with a handy little hut for sheltering from the wind or cold in the evening.
  • Flakstad Island: Lofoten Beach Camp located on one of the archipelago’s most beautiful beaches.
